What is a High-Risk Pregnancy?
A high-risk pregnancy is one in which the mother, baby, or both have a higher chance of health problems before, during, or after delivery. Such pregnancies require extra care, monitoring, and medical supervision to ensure safety
Causes of High-Risk Pregnancy
1) Pre-existing medical conditions
• Diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Thyroid disease
• Heart, kidney, or autoimmune diseases
2) Age factors –
• Pregnancy in teenagers (<17 years)
• Pregnancy after 35 years
3) Pregnancy-related complications -
• Preeclampsia
• Gestational diabetes
• Placenta problems (placenta previa, abruption)
• Multiple pregnancy (twins or more)
4) Previous pregnancy history -
• Past miscarriage or stillbirth
• Preterm birth
• Previous complicated delivery or cesarean
5) Lifestyle factors-
• Smoking, alcohol, or drug use
• Poor nutrition
• Lack of antenatal care
Warning Signs of High-Risk Pregnancy
Seek medical attention if any of the following occur:
• Immediate danger signs
• Heavy vaginal bleeding
• Severe abdominal pain
• Persistent vomiting
• High fever
Other important warning signs:
• Severe headache or blurred vision (may indicate Preeclampsia)
• Sudden swelling of face, hands, or feet
• Reduced or no baby movements
• Painful urination
• Early contractions (before 37 weeks)
Key Point
Early identification and proper care can greatly reduce risks and help ensure a healthy outcome for both mother and baby.
